The water park will be at the heart of the attractions at Qiddiya, close to Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. The expansive project will cover 337,948m2 of land and include 22 rides, nine of which will be world-firsts.

Dewan’s futuristic vision

The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will have nine distinct districts inspired by native animals and habitat, including Camel Rock, the Den, the Herding Grounds and Arabian Peak. Qiddiya will be 137,948m2 bigger than any such water park in the world.

The water park is part of the overall giga-project and is budgeted to cost in the region of $750mn.

Dewan will use smart technology to ensure that its operation aligns with its sustainability efforts. The architects are using highly advanced environmental systems that will allow them to use 75% less water than traditional practices.

Philippe Gas took on the position of CEO at the Qiddiya Investment Company in November of this year.

“This is a super exciting project. It is the world’s biggest venture when it comes to entertainment, sport, the arts, all together and integrated. This has never been done before. So the complexity of it is exciting.

“It is almost three times the size of Walt Disney World. It is huge. This is a place that will, by its size, offer people days of entertainment.”

Construction and infrastructure

“So this is going on, powerlines, electricity, preparing the land, flattening it, getting it ready for the construction for the different sites. This is, I would say, so far on pace. We have, as a focus for the coming few weeks, mostly between now and the early next year, a lot of work around mobility and transportation to Qiddiya from Riyadh.

“So it’s the celebration of life on one side. But it is also embracing the history of Saudi Arabia and the culture of Saudi Arabia and looking to the future. This world that we are creating will be all about innovation and technology, and things that you have not even seen before.

Sustainability

“Waste management, water consumption and biodiversity are the top three that we will focus on. We are also working with local companies and local producers so that’s another piece of our contribution to sustainability.”

Qiddiya city, an entertainment development located on the outskirts of Riyadh, will be home to the kingdom's first theme park. Qiddiya Investment Company said it awarded 2 billion riyals ($533 million) worth of contracts since construction began at the site last year.

Qiddiya Project includes a Six Flags Theme Park, a water park and other entertainment activities.

Qiddiya aims to continue a construction work well into 2022, preparing the site for testing and commissioning phase of attractions ahead of a grand opening in 2023.
