Corinthia Hotels has signed a hotel management agreement to operate a luxury resort in the Maldives. The property is slated to open in Q4 2025.
Early works on reclamation and the first phase of development of the resort located on the Kaafu Atoll have begun. The project will comprise two islands, hosting a 73-key resort on the larger of the two and a second, smaller private island for exclusive use. Corinthia Maldives will have aquatic-inspired architecture designed by HKS. The design of the main pavilion and all villas draws inspiration from the gentle curves of the ocean’s manta ray. The resort will also include wellness facilities, multiple fitness spaces and five restaurants.

It seems like this project was on hold due to Covid for some time and so the expected launch date has moved from 2021 to 2022.

According to latest news from Corporate Maldives, Bison Maldives (a major resort construction company in Maldives) signed a contract with Dutch Docklands Maldives in mid of February for the construction of the first homes in Maldives Floating City — a new, floating development of 5,000 homes being constructed in a lagoon five minutes speedboat ride from Male’.

The first houses will be ready after Ramadan, and tours for members of the public will commence shortly afterwards. The houses are being constructed locally, to specifications designed by engineers from the Netherlands.

The founder of Bison Maldives Abdul Majeed has confirmed the cooperation in this project and trusts that first houses for this exciting and innovative development will be delivered on time.

  7. Maldives Floating City Project (MFC)

This project was supposed to launch in September 2021 and in 2022 the real constructions were supposed to begin, according to their press release. Press release link to pdf file: (https://maldivesfloatingcity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/20210314-Press-release-MFC-ENGLISH-N.pdf)

Their website has never been updated since 2021 and I didn’t find any mentions in any articles about the launching of this project. None of the updates were found on the official Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or Twitter since 2021.
    Website: https://maldivesfloatingcity.com/

The project is probably postponed due to covid restrictions. On the Dutch Docklands website (http://www.dutchdocklands.com/Development/Maldives), I didn’t find any updates as well. The project didn’t announce any proper deadlines or postpones.

Also, the local is saying “there have been no real movements”. Found this comment under the YouTube video about this project, so it is not a reliable source. However, due to the whole research, I can tell that it looks like the truth.

"I'm from Maldives, and I'm personally linked to the government and the Parliament, as well as some of the most economically influential people in the country. This has maybe been talked about, but there has been no real movements, you also might want to get the information on the local economy checked out, its inaccurate, try to talk to someone that knows the subject matter personally if you can. And I wouldn't trust Mohamed Nasheed, a charismatic and shrewd as he is, but he has been tripping over himself for years."

Replied to his comment and tried to find him on social media, texted him everywhere, but still no reply. If there will be any chance to talk with him and get more info, I will definitely update my post.

The atoll nation of Maldives is creating an innovative floating city that mitigates the effects of climate change and stays on top of rising sea levels.

The first-of-its kind “island city” will be based in a warm-water lagoon just 10 minutes by boat from the capital Male and its international airport. Real construction is planned to start in 2022 and according to forecasts, the floating city is expected to be finished by the second half of the decade.

"The project foresees an area of ??about 200 hectares, where buildings will rise directly on the water and where there will be not only houses, but also hotels, restaurants and trendy boutiques. There will also be a school and a hospital.”
“With the start of the works, sales will open. It will be possible to buy lots starting from 250 thousand dollars (roughly just over 200 thousand euros), for a house of about 300 square meters, with a roof terrace and inevitable sea view.”
