Foster + Partners 'wins contract to design 2km-tall Saudi skyscraper'

The scheme is set to be twice the height of the current record holder, the 828-m-tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai designed by US-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), reported The Architects’ Journal.

The proposed record-breaking Riyadh skyscraper, which will come up on a site close to King Khalid International Airport, north of the Saudi capital, would be more than four times higher than Foster + Partners’ current tallest scheme: the 423m-tall JPMorgan Chase World Headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, New York, which is nearing completion, it stated

The North Pole project was a collaboration with SOM and is an urban masterplan vision for a city of the future near Riyadh that combines historic organic urbanism, advanced transportation systems, high-performance architecture, sustainable materials, circular economy strategies, and progressive adaptability for a future population. The idea was to allow the existing city to grow into a series of clusters that would form a new metropolis based on principles of smart urbanism for sustainable growth. The pubic spaces were shaped according to climate responsiveness and access to nature. Mobility systems combined autonomous vehicles, rapid underground transit, and air taxis. The city centers focused on strategically generating density to create a multilayered vertical living experience with nature, amenities, and lifestyles.
