Saudi Arabia’s Emaar The Economic City (Emaar EC) has started planning and design work for the Rixos Emerald Shores resort looking out to the Red Sea coast.

The construction firm has signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Tourism Development Fund, FTG Development Company, Albilad Investment Company, and Ekofine Holding BV to establish a SAR1.8 billion (aprox. US$480 million) closed and private investment fund for the project. The fund will be used to develop and operate the five-star resort, as well as its luxury ‘underwater villas’. It’s also on track to have a water park, beach areas, kids clubs, gyms and more than 10 F&B outlets.

Slated for a 2023 opening, the 275,000sq m resort will be one of the largest tourism developments within the ambitious King Abdullah Economic City. The resort will include 500 keys, as well as 35 hotel villas with views of the Red Sea coast.

The desert megacity was announced in 2005 by the late King Abdullah. Masterplanned by Emaar EC, the city is an hour’s drive from Jeddah and is equal in size roughly to Washington, DC. Once complete, it will have a population equal to that of Brussels at about two million, and have a port, residential areas, and of course, hotels.

The Saudi-based Emaar, the Economic City (Emaar EC), has signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Kingdom’s Tourism Development Fund, FTG Development Company, Albilad Investment Company, and Ekofine, to set up a $479 million fund.

The Rixos Emerald Shores project is set to be one of the largest tourist resorts to be established in KAEC. It will be constructed on a total area of 275,000sqm along the Red Sea coast. It will feature 600 metres of beachfront and a golf course.

The resort is expected to be one of the largest leisure tourism destinations in Saudi Arabia, with a variety of facilities and hotel units. It includes more than 500 rooms and 35 luxury hotel villas built in a ‘distinctive and modern style’. The resort will provide an integrated water park, beaches, clubs for children, and gyms. In addition, there will be more than 10 varied options for dining, consisting of international restaurants and cafes, it concluded.
