Works have officially commenced on Phase 1 of the long-term transformation of Singapore’s Sentosa–Brani island cluster, marking a significant milestone for one of Asia’s most ambitious landscape-led regeneration projects.

Grant Associates developed the Greater Sentosa Master Plan on behalf of Sentosa Development Corporation, setting out a long-term vision that repositions the islands as a resilient, world-class leisure and ecological destination.

First unveiled in 2019, the masterplan establishes a landscape-first framework for the evolution of the islands — reconnecting fragmented habitats, strengthening coastal resilience and creating immersive visitor experiences rooted in the unique island ecology of Sentosa and Pulau Brani.

The commencement of Phase 1 marks the transition from strategic vision to physical delivery. Phase 1 will introduce major public‑realm, mobility, and coastal improvements, including:

    • A new transport hub linking Sentosa and Pulau Brani as part of the broader Greater Sentosa connectivity network. The hub will anchor future lifestyle and hospitality developments, and includes plans to replace the Sentosa Express with future‑ready transit options.

    • Rejuvenated beaches and integrated coastal protection measures, enabling visitors to continue enjoying the shoreline while ensuring Sentosa remains safeguarded against rising sea levels and climate‑related risks.

    • New destination icons that will guide visitors through restored heritage buildings, nature trails and elevated lookout points.

At the heart of the masterplan is a commitment to shaping development around natural systems. Coastal landscapes, restored habitats and layered public realm strategies form the backbone of the islands’ transformation — ensuring that tourism, biodiversity and climate resilience are embedded together from the outset.

The wider transformation will unfold over the coming decades, guided by a framework that balances environmental stewardship with economic vitality and public access.

Yes, the Brani Port Terminal is still fully functional. I suppose it will take a while to relocate it.

Brani Island’s redevelopment will begin after port operations move to Tuas Port by 2027. It will then be integrated with Sentosa as part of the Sentosa-Brani Master Plan, rolled out in phases.

Being Asia’s leading leisure destination, Sentosa is known for its diverse array of unique leisure experiences today, ranging from themed attractions, dining offerings and accommodation options to beaches and nature trails. As we move into the next phase of our development, we will build on this strong position to rejuvenate our offerings, including the rolling out the Greater Sentosa Master Plan (formerly known as Sentosa-Brani Master Plan) which will redevelop the two islands into a game-changing leisure and tourism destination.

An integral design principle of these plans is on sustainable development. Even as we refresh our offerings amid changing guest preferences and needs, we remain firmly committed to environmental sustainability and protecting our island charm, and will ensure that the plans are sensitive and authentic to our rich natural and cultural heritage.

    Hey everyone,

As no one posted updates yet, I want to share something fascinating (at least for me). I’ve been exploring Brani Island from its historical role to its new life as part of Singapore’s grand redevelopment plans and stumbled upon a fascinating entry from the National Archives of Singapore showing Pulau Brani’s past - some old photos and notes that capture the island’s strategic significance in the history, especially when it was under British influence.

Comparing those archival images with the future concepts found on social media is quite surreal. Back then, you can see rugged coastline, military infrastructure, and a quieter sense of life. Fast-forward to now, and there’s talk of Brani Island joining Sentosa in a futuristic Greater Southern Waterfront initiative, complete with waterfront walkways, eco-friendly tourist spots, and possibly even next-gen attractions.

From the press release (https://www.sg101.gov.sg/resources/connexionsg/islandsofsingapore-pulau-brani/) on Pulau Brani to Sentosa Brani Masterplan (https://wilkinsoneyre.com/projects/sentosa-brani-masterplan) showing modern developments, the transformation looks nothing short of remarkable. We might see a total shift from container terminals to leisure hubs - and I can’t help but wonder how they’ll preserve the island’s heritage in the process.

Personally, I’d love to see some of the original historical elements integrated into the new design - like a heritage museum or thematic resort that celebrates Brani’s past. Singapore is good at balancing heritage with modernity, so hopefully they strike the right chord here.

Anyone else curious about how these old sites might be repurposed? Or heard any whispers about official plans for reusing iconic heritage buildings?
