Developer behind one of the North West’s most eagerly-anticipated mega developments has given project updates.

In April 2022, updated designed for the Therme Manchester Wellbeing Resort were revealed. Work commenced in September to clear the way for the £250 million destination, with the demolition set to be complete by Christmas 2022. Work involves demolishing the 28,000 square metre former EventCity conference and exhibition centre on Barton Dock Road.

Key features will include a next-generation waterpark, botanical garden and a series of wellbeing and water activities. The UK’s first all-season beach will also form a centrepiece. Meanwhile, state-of-the-art digital art has also been teased to be included around the resort.

Demolition work on EventCity has begun. The site is expected to be cleared in time for construction to begin in March.

There are giant palm trees as far as the eye can see, the temperature is a constant 30C and there's the gentle splish splash of water as I dip my toes into a vast swimming pool complete with a swim-up cocktail bar. I may be abroad right now - but one day Manchester, one day very soon, this really will be ours.
I'm at the original Therme Waterpark in Bucharest, Romania - a huge indoor domed waterpark and wellness experience boasting 10 pools, 16 water slides, 10 saunas and outdoor beaches, pools and fountains. It's a truly jaw-dropping experience - but even more astounding is that the next Therme Waterpark will be right here in Manchester and it will be DOUBLE the size of this one.

Therme Manchester won't be opening until 2025 so pricing has not yet been confirmed, but bosses say it will follow a similar structure to how it's done in Bucharest. And that too, is aimed at being affordable and accessible to all with a sliding scale of fees - I'm gobsmacked when I see how reasonably it's all priced in Romania.

As for where things are up to with the Therme Manchester site? Well, earlier this month plans were submitted to Trafford Council by landowner Peel L&P to demolish the EventCity conference space on Barton Dock Road to finally make way for the building works to start.

The 28-acre resort opposite Trafford Palazzo and The Trafford Centre is set to create 1,200 jobs and have a £4.5bn economic impact for the region. The build time is set to be approximately two years - so we're looking at a 2025 launch .

Peel L&P submitted two applications to Trafford Council in relation to EventCity on Phoenix Way and the Soccer Dome on Trafford Way last month, both of which were approved on October 6. Now approved, the demolition work is expected to start almost immediately.

The request has only just gone in to begin demolition on the current attractions on that site. That seems a bit late to me considering they are meant to begin construction next year.

If backed, the regeneration business would knock down the 28,000 sq m EventCity conference and exhibition space on Barton Dock Road.

If approved, the demolitions would start as early as the end of September/beginning of October and be complete around spring 2023. The construction of Therme Manchester is set to begin in 2023 with a build time of approximately two years.

So to say "building works are in the preliminary stages" over 6 months ago, nothing has happened on this site so far as far as I can tell unless they are only working on the outside.

Here is the Google Earth latest images from 2021 - highlighted is the area for the attraction itself, I can see a huge problem with parking if they don't add more capacity here though, they are using the current additinal parking that site has as part of the footprint so unless they expand it somewhere else this will be an operational nightmare when it's busy.

I used to work in the mall area next to it and on a busy weekend the parking and travel in and out of that particular area was awful. Adding this new attraction will need serious consideration for the volume of traffic it needs to operate profitably.
