The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has unveiled the architectural vision behind Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the cultural institution set to open on December 11, 2026 in Saadiyat Cultural District.

Designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the museum has been conceived as a site-specific landmark that responds directly to Abu Dhabi’s landscape, climate and cultural identity. From the early stages of development, Gehry and his team undertook extensive research and site visits to understand how people move, gather and experience the emirate.

The architectural concept extends beyond conventional gallery spaces, incorporating shaded courtyards, terraced outdoor areas and gathering spaces that connect visitors with both art and the surrounding environment.

The design creates a relationship between indoor and outdoor experiences, reflecting the distinctive qualities of Abu Dhabi.

A defining feature is a cluster of monumental cones, including nine clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass.

The sculptural structures also serve a functional purpose, responding to Abu Dhabi’s climate by providing shade and encouraging airflow through the museum’s courtyards and terraces.

The cones are designed to draw warm air upwards while directing cooler breezes below, helping create a more comfortable microclimate.

The resulting building comprises 28 galleries, 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition space within a total building area of 84,000 square metres.

DMT also announced a planned 37-kilometre coastal expressway linking Al Hudayriyat Island to the E11 at Al Nouf, connecting Al Dhafra directly to Abu Dhabi Island through a series of natural islands including Al Futaisi and Al Aryam. The route will carry both commercial freight and everyday commuters, with environmental protections built around the Bul Syayeef Marine Protected Area and Ramsar wetland.

I’ve been to Hudayriyat Island. It’s a really nice development overall, and the beach looks great. The seabed is quite mushy, though, so it’s not the most pleasant swimming experience.

I've studied the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, and here’s what’s planned for Lulu Island. Very interesting and promising, especially for the possible return of the Volcano Fountain, as it looks like the island will have a cultural district.

Yes, this is the actual island, and as you can see, a major motorway cuts through it. I really hope that the development is going to be of very high quality, with superb sound insulation.

The Row Saadiyat is a new boutique residential community coming to Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District. Launched by Aldar Properties, the project will feature seven well-designed mid-rise buildings, offering comfortable living with views of the Zayed National Museum.
