An update on Cotino (A Storyliving by Disney Community), December 28, 2022
Daps Magic friend Drew from Galactic Surplus was down in the area and took some photos of the project site over the holiday week. At the beginning of his trip found not a lot happening beyond keeping the area from getting too dusty. However, then some machinery arrived and work began to happen on the property. Here are the photos that Drew shared throughout the last week of the Cotino – A Storyliving by Disney Community site.

The one community locale we do know about it called “Cotino,” and the site chosen in Rancho Mirage, California, for said “Cotino” community was picked because of the area’s ties to Walt and Lillian Disney. But it has yet to be developed, and we didn’t know when the ground would even be broken.

Now, six months after the initial announcement, we don’t really know much more than we knew the day the announcement was made.

Plans are moving forward for Cotino, Disney’s mixed-use development in Rancho Mirage, after councilmembers unanimously supported the location of about 10% of the roughly 1,700 homes charted for the community.
The Rancho Mirage City Council approved a subdivision of the project that includes 187 single-family homes by a 4-0 vote, with councilmember Steve Downs absent, during its meeting Thursday.
The 618-acre project, also known as the Section 31 development, is slated to include a 24-acre swimmable lagoon and a resort hotel on vacant land, located off Bob Hope Drive, between Frank Sinatra and Gerald Ford drives, and across from the entrance to Sunnylands Center and Gardens.

Cotino will offer a mix of homes, including estates, single-family homes and condominiums, as well as a 55-plus community, along with a town center with shops and restaurants. All homes are planned for full-time residents.

A new ad has been released to show off the ideas behind Cotino - A Storyliving by Disney Community.

The commercial promises “charming new home communities where Disney storytelling takes on a personal style.” It adds that Disney is looking at locations across the United States to build new communities.

Let’s have a peek at the recent shots made on-site of "Cotino - A Storyliving by Disney". The fences are up and the project sign is installed — looks like the place is getting ready for constructions.

Imagine the thrilling day when sweeping, stylish homes in Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community, begin rising from the valley floor! Today, I’m excited to share a first look at the design concepts that will inspire the homes in this dream community.
Before home building begins, officials in the City of Rancho Mirage will review the Cotino community’s Preliminary Development Plan including these home design inspirations and a collection of home floor plans. The plans submitted are not intended be actual homes; they are meant to be representative inspiration of the types of homes and designs that builders will offer in the Cotino community.

Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community, will feature the attention to detail, unique amenities and special touches consumers come to expect from Disney. When it begins to welcome residents – scheduled for 2024 – this vibrant community will welcome homeowners of all ages. At least one section will be expressly for residents 55+. Sales are scheduled to begin in early 2023.

Imagineers joined the groundbreaking ceremony today for Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community being brought to life alongside world-class designers and developers in Rancho Mirage, CA. Michael Hundgen, Exec Producer, shared how the project team is drawing on the region’s past and present to inspire the story of Cotino – one that is connected to the natural beauty and rich history of Coachella Valley, as well as its continued influence in arts, music, and culture.

We anticipate welcoming residents in early 2024, and can’t wait to share more as progress continues!

This new development in California was announced a while ago, without any specific details, but it has now been announced that Disney will be holding a private groundbreaking ceremony at Cotino on April 26th at 10AM, according to an article in The Desert Sun.

Construction will begin with grading the land, which could take anywhere from six to nine months. A spokesman for the Rancho Mirage City Council said they have not yet received specific building plans for the community and that while initial proposals for Cotino have been approved, it still must go through the application and approval process which includes a presentation before the Architectural Review Board, the Planning Commission, and finally the City Council. At the City Council meeting, the public will be able to give their opinions on the new community.

Set to launch in the state's Palm Springs region with a mini city called Cotino, the endeavor signals the start of Disney's new Storyliving initiative, announced Wednesday as involving multiple "master-planned" communities intended to "inspire" residents to foster new friends amid "vibrant new neighborhoods that are infused with the Company's special brand of magic."
