Barcelona-based architecture studio Bofill Taller de Arquitectura was commissioned to design the Royal Arts Complex (RAC) by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City in 2019. Currently under construction, the 320,000-square-meter building complex comprises thirteen structures, each contributing to the promotion of artistic expression. The project is located within King Salman Park, a 13.3-square-kilometer park being developed on the site of Riyadh's former airport. The broader development includes mixed-use projects to transform the area into a major recreational district.

The dam in the Trojena project is one of the most prominent infrastructure projects within the NEOM area in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The main objective of the project is to create an artificial lake stretching 2.8 kilometers, which will serve as a central component of a mountain tourism destination designed to support winter sports and develop the region’s tourism sector. The project involves the construction of three dams with different technical specifications and functions. Sustainability and environmental integration are core principles of the design and execution process.

The dam is located at the heart of the Trojena project, a mountainous area within NEOM that sits at an elevation ranging between 1,500 and 2,600 meters above sea level. The primary goal of the dam is to provide structural support for an artificial lake that will be used as part of the infrastructure for mountain tourism and winter sports. The lake will cover an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers and include an island designated for diving and exploration activities.

The dam plays a foundational role in preparing Trojena to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games, reinforcing its ambition to become a global center for winter sports and high-end tourism.

This video was shot sometime in 2024, and it provides a super cool overview of the project. The launch of the King Abdullah International Gardens is planned for Autumn 2025, although it looks like many important details still need to be completed. I'm not sure it will be ready on time, but you never know - anything is possible in the GCC.

I think the perfect spot for the fountain would be on Saadiyat Island, right next to the Zayed National Museum. It feels like such a meaningful location, especially considering how Sheikh Zayed always envisioned Abu Dhabi as an oasis in the desert. Placing the fountain there would really bring back some of that original charm.

It was THE landmark in Abu Dhabi!!! I miss it so much. They widened the Corniche road back then, which is why it got taken down. We all thought they were just going to move it somewhere else, but sadly it never came back.

Anyone know if Ramesh Menon ever got anywhere with that petition? I heard some rumors it might be reinstated, but nothing official yet.

Many in Abu Dhabi especially those who grew up seeing the fountain miss it. But one man has decided to take the initiative to bring this beautiful fountain back. Ramesh Menon, an Indian who works in the capital, has sent a petition to the authorities in Abu Dhabi asking them to find the right place to restore this grand monument to the city.
