Now that Expo 2020 is over, work is being done to create District 2020.

Dubai is getting ready to welcome District 2020, a ‘smart city’ that will take shape in and around the Expo venue – and in no time emerge as the next big thing when it comes to choosing an office, a home, or a retail space.

Dismantling of all non-legacy structures at Expo site will be done in 3-6 months.

Marjan, RAK Hospitality Holding and Wynn Resorts, Limited, the US-listed international developer and operator of luxury resorts, have announced a multibillion-dollar integrated resort development on the man-made Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

The spectacular Al Marjan Island, already a leading tourism destination, is only 15 minutes from the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport and 45 minutes from the Dubai International Airport. Comprising four islands, Al Marjan Island delights visitors with over 7.8 kilometers of sparkling beaches and 23 kilometers of waterfront in addition to world-class hotels and residential developments.

Al Marjan Island spans an area of 2.7 million sqm of reclaimed land extending into the Arabian Gulf. The new integrated resort on one of the exclusive islands, which covers an area of almost 250,000 sqm, will offer a pristine setting with spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf as well as sandy beaches and a marina. The development is the first beach resort being developed by Wynn Resorts globally. The current scope includes a 1,000+ room hotel, high-end shopping mall, a state-of-the-art meeting and convention facility, an exclusive spa, more than 10 restaurants and lounges, a wide array of entertainment choices, a gaming area, and other amenities.

The integrated resort will be developed with significant foreign direct investment by Wynn Resorts. As the largest project of its kind in the Emirate's growing hospitality sector, it will create substantial value to the local economy by accelerating tourism, creating jobs, and energising the growth of related sectors. Set to be completed in 2026, the entire project will be developed to the highest standards of sustainability best practices.

Eng. Abdulla Al Abdooli, CEO of Marjan, said the new integrated resort highlights the fast-growing recognition of Ras Al Khaimah as a leading investment destination for high-quality hospitality projects. "The integrated development, featuring a world-class hotel, entertainment and gaming amenities, will add to the Emirate's destination strategy to attract tourists from across the world. We are partnering with Wynn Resorts, one of the world's most renowned integrated resort companies, which has a strong track record of developing luxury destinations with exceptional accommodation, dining, entertainment concepts and gaming facilities. By leveraging Wynn Resorts' expertise in developing luxury hospitality destinations, the new development will raise the benchmark in luxury hospitality in the region. It will also create exceptional value to the Ras Al Khaimah economy and boost the leisure, business, and MICE tourism sectors."

Craig Billings, newly appointed CEO of Wynn Resorts, said: "Al Marjan Island is a pristine setting and an ideal greenfield location for us to create the one-of-a-kind guest experiences for which Wynn Resorts is renowned. The region offers tremendous potential for the hospitality and tourism industry, and we are excited about the prospect of developing an integrated resort in Ras Al Khaimah."

The new resort is in the initial stages of design and development and will be applying for an integrated resort licence from Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.

I came across this article in Indonesian stating that the chairman of MNC Group showcased the resort plans to British ambassador Owen Jenkins (from what I can gather on Google Translate). There's a photo with the resort layout below:

Unstable weather conditions in the UAE have forced some pavilions to close due to damage from the heavy rains.

Organisers at Expo 2020 Dubai are working round the clock to ensure pavilions stay open despite the heavy rain in recent days.

Several were forced to temporarily close as staff worked to repair damage caused by the downpours.
Also want to add that in the past couple of weeks especially during the holidays, some pavilions have been forced to shut due to COVID outbreaks amongst the staff.

Dubai's Expo 2020 said that virus outbreaks among staff may force some parts of the fair to "close temporarily for deep cleaning and sanitization," without elaborating on the scope or the location of the infections.
I personally haven't been there in a while, waiting for the weather to be better and the cases to mellow down a little bit.

    Update on construction:

The Osaka prefectural and city governments on Dec. 21 announced a plan for developing a casino-centered integrated resort expected to open in 2029 that will be backed by 20 major companies.

Well-known firms such as Panasonic Corp., Suntory Holdings Ltd. and West Japan Railway Co. will invest in the project, according to the details announced.

The resort is planned to be built on the artificial Yumeshima island in Osaka Bay.

But the city will need to shoulder about 79 billion yen ($692 million) for soil-improvement measures, including site decontamination and control measures against soil liquefaction, according to the plan.

Quick update: Saudi ACWA secures $1.33bn to power The Red Sea Project

Saudi-listed ACWA Power closed $1.33 billion financing for its renewable project to power The Red Sea Development Co., known as TRSDC, according to a filing.

The debt facility closure was arranged by a consortium including Al Rajhi Bank, Banque Saudi Fransi, The Saudi British Bank, Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation, Standard Chartered Bank, and Riyad Bank.

The utility developer was awarded the contract to drive and operate the renewable power-based multi-utilities infrastructure to serve The Red Sea Project, or TRSP, back in November.

Looks like Yas Island is getting more apartments.

Reportage Properties has announced the start of construction work on its Diva project on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

The project – which will add 736 new housing units with prices starting at AED510,000 – is planned to be finished and handed over by the last quarter of 2024.

It is one of 12 real estate estates being developed by Reportage Properties in the UAE, providing about 6,000 homes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, in addition to a project that has already been handed over in Masdar City.

Been waiting for this one. Just in time for the National Day holiday/long weekend coming up.

Yas Bay Waterfront, a vibrant leisure and entertainment district on Yas Island, will open on December 1.

The destination will bring new dining concepts to Abu Dhabi, including the Ibiza-style beach club, Cafe del Mar, known for its distinctive ambience, music and Mediterranean cuisine; Paradiso, a globally renowned Mediterranean restaurant helmed by Nicole Rubi, the woman behind La Petite Maison, and Michelin-lauded chef Pierre Gagnaire; and critically acclaimed Japanese street-food concept, Akiba Dori.
